In May of 2024, I was invited to speak to a group of pastors in a lakeside village at Guatemala’s picturesque Lake Atitlan. We climbed for a long way on the twisting highway out of Guatemala City and then plummeted down multiple sharp switchbacks into this ancient volcanic crater where the lake sits. Perched on the steep mountainside is the beautiful village of San Pablo la Laguna.

We met in the church of Pastor David.  The church was spacious and rustic, filled with traditional Guatemalan charm.  The attendance was encouraging, and the participants were sharp, but one of the things that really stood out to me was pastor David’s story.

SEPAL leaders Héctor and Patty Pivaral had been training pastors in this area many years ago. David showed up at the church where the Biblical Education Program was being developed. He knocked on the door, and Patty opened it. His voice was soft, deep, raspy, and hard to hear from years of substance abuse, but he was asking Patty if he could be trained as a pastor.

Patty called Héctor to tell him to send David away. But Héctor listened to his story and his desire for biblical training. He was asked to return the next day, and he did. The group of pastors and leaders being trained were afraid of him because they knew him as violent, a drunk, and a drug addict. His life was in ruins, but he had already met the Lord. Patty told Héctor, "I don't think he'll make it, don't waste your time on him." Héctor replied, "I know that God's Word can transform him." The next day, he told David graciously, "If you come to the training, I will disciple you."

David and his wife, Carmen, faithfully attended the program. David was discipled by Héctor for three years. David's life was being transformed. He grew in his knowledge of the Scriptures, intimacy with God, and love for people. David's voice returned, and he was ready to start preaching. David started the church "El Remanente," reaching out to people who were like him. People who were lost and without hope. He began preaching to the drunks, the addicts, the prostitutes, the traffickers, and the gang members, and they began to surrender their lives to Jesus. Today, his church is full of beautiful people who follow Jesus and share their faith with others.

The church is growing, and they continue to start new discipleship groups where more people hear the gospel and learn to follow Jesus.  One of the men who attended our event was a former gang member who had given his life to the Lord.  Once, he was pursued daily by the police, and he had to spend his days in hiding.  On the day of our conference, I watched him walk out of the church and have a short conversation with a local police officer who was directing traffic before he rode off on his motorcycle.  The transformation in his life has been so profound that the police are no longer interested in him.  They have seen the impact of Jesus in his life.

I praise God for the work of Hector, Patty, and their team.  The impact they have on leaders like Pastor David is radiated out to their churches and communities.  The OCGA is making an impact in Guatemala!

En mayo de 2024, fui invitado a hablar con un grupo de pastores en un pueblo del pintoresco Lago de Atitlán en Guatemala. Fuimos por un largo camino, por la carretera sinuosa desde la Ciudad de Guatemala y luego descendimos por múltiples curvas pronunciadas hacia el antiguo cráter volcánico donde se encuentra el lago (una historia de hace 84,000 años). En la empinada ladera de la montaña se encuentra el hermoso pueblo de San Pablo la Laguna.

Nos reunimos en la iglesia del Pastor David. La iglesia era espaciosa y rústica, llena del encanto tradicional guatemalteco. La asistencia fue alentadora y los participantes eran muy atentos, pero una de las cosas que realmente me llamó la atención fue la historia del Pastor David.

Los líderes de SEPAL, Héctor y Patty Pivaral, estaban capacitando a pastores en esta área hace muchos años. David se presentó en la iglesia donde se estaba desarrollando el Programa de Educación Bíblica. Él tocó la puerta y Patty le abrió. Su voz era suave, profunda, ronca y difícil de escuchar debido a años de abuso de sustancias. Y le pidió a Patty si podía ser capacitado como pastor y así ayudar a otras personas.

Patty llamó a Hector para que le dijera que se fuera. Pero Héctor escuchó su historia y su deseo de prepararse bíblicamente. Se le pidió que regresara al siguiente día y así lo hizo. El grupo de pastores y líderes que se estaban preparando le tenían miedo porque lo conocían por violento, borracho y drogadicto. Su vida estaba en ruinas pero ya había conocido al Señor. Patty le dijo a Héctor: “No creo que lo logre, no pierdas tu tiempo con él”. Héctor le respondió: “Yo sé que la Palabra de Dios lo puede transformar”. Al otro día le dijo a David con gracia: “Si vienes a la capacitación, te discipularé”.

David y su esposa Carmen asistieron fielmente al programa. Y David fue discipulado por Héctor durante tres años. La vida de David estaba siendo transformada. Creció en su conocimiento de las Escrituras, su intimidad con Dios y su amor por las personas. La voz de David regresó y estaba listo para comenzar a predicar. David inició la iglesia El Remanente alcanzando a personas que eran como él. Personas que estaban perdidas y sin esperanza. Comenzó a predicar a los borrachos, los adictos, las prostitutas, los traficantes y los pandilleros; y comenzaron a entregar sus vidas a Jesús. Hoy su iglesia está llena de personas hermosas que están siguiendo a Jesús y compartiendo su fe con otros.

La iglesia está creciendo y continúan iniciando nuevos grupos de discipulado donde más personas están escuchando el evangelio y aprendiendo a seguir a Jesús. Uno de los hombres que asistió a nuestro evento era un ex pandillero que ha entregado su vida al Señor. Antes era perseguido diariamente por la policía y tenía que pasar sus días escondiéndose. El día de nuestra conferencia, lo vi salir de la iglesia y tener una breve conversación con un policía local que estaba dirigiendo el tráfico antes de irse en su motocicleta. La transformación en su vida ha sido tan profunda que la policía ya no está interesada en él. Han visto el impacto de Jesús en su vida.

Alabo a Dios por el trabajo de Héctor, Patty y su equipo. El impacto que tienen en líderes como el Pastor David se irradia a sus iglesias y comunidades. ¡El OCGA está teniendo un impacto en Guatemala!
