Seeking the Unimaginable!

When I first started out in ministry, my dad reminded me not to be wise in my own eyes—the importance of staying grounded in my walk with the Lord and not relying on my own talents or abilities apart from the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. That was wise counsel, but it isn’t always easy to remember and apply.

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.  Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from Evil."  Proverbs 3:5-7

If we are limited by our own understanding and abilities, we will never experience the unimaginable. From time to time, it’s easy for me to slip back into depending on my own strengths—and the Lord usually has a great way of knocking me off my feet and back onto His path. Does that ever happen to you?

A Gut check from God?

Last week, I participated in the Outreach Canada staff retreat in Chilliwack, BC. It was a beautiful time in the forest with my old team. The theme was Experiencing the Unimaginable, and a large portion of our four days together was supposed to be spent in prayer and reflection with God. At the end of day two, about 30 of the 40+ participants came down with a violent illness at the same time. After several hours of purging our systems, we were left drained and exhausted. Incapacitated in this way, God forced us to “be still.” In my day of rest, I slept, listened to worship music in bed, and reflected on how God has helped me become smaller while He becomes greater in my life.

How did we get here?

Did you know that when I was just starting out in university, I was terrified of public speaking? It took an act of God to call our family into public ministry. A younger Craig and Heather never considered it imaginable that God could use them for international leadership—but God did! God continues to use our story to encourage others to trust in the Lord, step out in faith, and pursue the unimaginable in their lives.

Where do we recognize the unimaginable in our lives?

  • God’s simple provisions and care for our family and ministry.
  • God continues to use us unexpectedly to do the unimaginable—like the opportunity to help a friend going through a hard time or calling someone at the very moment that they needed encouragement.
  • Big Things that are totally unexpected!
  • Seeing God at work through our teams:
    • Our teams continue to share amazing stories about how God is doing great things through their faithful presence and service.  Check out some of our impact stories in the OCGA Blog.

We would love to hear how you are seeing God do the unimaginable.
